* * *

Chase was lying in the dark, his head propped on one arm of the couch, his feet on the other, beating himself up over asking Diana if she wanted to go to the city with him. He hadn’t intended to ask. Why would he, when he had an entire team of experts dedicated to seeking the truth who could back him up?

And then her expression had fallen, and she’d seemed so crushed at the thought of the investigation moving on without her. But why not take her? She’d been with the investigation since the beginning, had proven herself strong and courageous and smart. Actually, if not for her bravery in the first place, running into that burning cabin, Emmie would no doubt be long gone. Diana deserved a chance to see this through. And Zac had agreed.

Chase swung his feet over the side of the couch someone had moved into one of the bedrooms and sat up. Apparently, two hours was as much sleep as he was going to get. He sighed and scrubbed his hands over his face. No sense lying there wasting time. He’d get up, eat something and go over the notes Angela had compiled on the murdered PI. Who knew? Maybe something would jump out at him that the others had missed. He doubted it, but it couldn’t hurt to—

A scream had him on his feet, gun in hand. He flew through the door before the echo finished reverberating.

As he reached Emmie’s door, it whipped open, and Shae stood in the doorway holding up her hands to block the dozen or so agents all crammed into the hallway with their weapons drawn. “It’s all right. Just a nightmare.”

The other agents dispersed. All except Shae’s husband, Mason. He slung an arm around his wife and pulled her close. Knowing what the two of them had been through last Christmas, Chase couldn’t blame him. Emmie’s scream must have nearly stopped his heart.

Chase holstered his weapon. “That poor kid.”

Shae pursed her lips and glanced over her shoulder, then shook her head. “Not Emmie.”

His heart stuttered. Maybe he’d been wrong. Maybe he shouldn’t have involved Diana any further in this investigation. Maybe he was asking too much of her. “Is she okay?”

“Yeah, just a nightmare. But it must have been a bad one.”

“Do you think she’d talk to me for a minute?” For what? Was he hoping to help her in some way? Fat chance of that happening, considering he was probably more of a mess than she was. He was damaged beyond repair, and he had no idea how to heal himself, much less anyone else. But she’d been a friend to him in a moment of weakness. The least he could do was return the favor.

“I think she could probably use a friend right now.” Shae smiled and stepped aside for him to enter, then wrapped her arm around Mason’s waist and rested her head against his shoulder as the two of them wandered toward the kitchen.
